I am way too comfortable with procrastination and I hate it.

Have you ever sat and stared at your computer screen, longing for inspiration on the work you decided you knew you had and wanted to do? Do you remember back in school when homework would find its way to be done, about 12 hours before it’s due? Well for me it was and is still the case.

I have numerous drafts of blog posts, photos that needed post processing and an online portfolio that is just begging for my attention. So why do I not press ahead? I’d like to give some elaborate story about not having the right setup or that I don’t feel good enough. But I’d only be lying to myself. I have a better setup than most and I have some amazing friends who constantly, genuinely and without provocation supply me with positive feedback.

I can convince myself of two reasons why I am so comfortable with procrastination. One is laziness and the other is fear of failure. Well the former excuse is harder to admit but easier to explain while the second excuse is the equal opposite.
Laziness
Laziness is perpetuated by the number of distractions. However, if we don’t manage those distractions we will just find ourselves going down a rabbit hole (I am looking at you Netflix + binge watching!). Of course once we do find ourselves in front of the computer you have sites such as Facebook, Reddit and others vying for your attention. There are apps out there that can stop these from being accessed but because they are self governed, if you aren’t willing to avoid them, how well can these work?
Fear Of Failure
Then there is my own demon – fear of failure. Failing to achieve what I feel is a result of failing to gain peer acknowledgment. When you are have social media stars and creators who are producing work that make your own look miserable, it feels that you are failing before you start.

One solution is writing down goals. If you do go down that route then  just set yourself small weekly goals. Set ones that you can tick off. Also when setting goals, make sure you reward yourself. Simple ones like watching en extra episode of your favorite TV show or even having a lie in. Also, have one goal that you know you’ll enjoy doing and it will make going through the other ones more doable.

Now it’s time for me to practice what I post.
