I’m not sure if you are old enough to remember what a VHS tape is. It was a rectangular shaped container that allowed videos to be recorded on them through strips of magnetic tape. In fact when I think about how little while ago those existed and how far we have come technology wise, it is pretty outstanding.
Anyway, I digress. The one thing about a VHS tape is that it could be rerecorded over. Obviously the more you recorded over it, the more worn out it became and sometimes you could catch shadows of the previous recording just so slightly on it.
Now, I had a theory that I discussed with a friend of mine the other day. We were briefly talking about reincarnation and it got me thinking about the soul. Maybe the soul is like a VHS tape that gets reused. Now hear me out. I accept that the population is far bigger today then it was when time began and I would accept that there are some brand new VHS tapes (souls) out there.
However there are some older reused VHS tapes. In a way I like to think that souls aren’t wasted in that way. That sometimes there are particular VHS tapes that have had moments of greatness recorded on them which on the revised soul can be glimpsed at. And maybe some of the greatest minds that exist today are those that can tap into what was once recorded on their soul VHS tape.
Maybe that could also explain how sometimes people just can’t seem to see straight because their tape just has had too many uses and can’t function properly anymore.
This idea is quite absurd and perhaps even blasphemous in some quarters. I mean for one, where would the idea of VHS even have come from when humanity started and why would we still be using them?
However, and this may be nostalgia, but if you like me remember the VHS tape, there is something quite reminiscent about it. There was no skipping forward or waste with a VHS tape. If you only had a limited supply but still needed to record, you were going to have to sacrifice one and reuse it. And for the previous generation, some of their fondest memories can be found stored on a VHS tape.
So maybe the one thing that we can learn to do or try to do. Make sure that memories that we record are worthy for the next soul, because who knows which part ends up getting reused.
